| Master of Architecture |
 | | Category Architecture | | Description: The Master of Architecture degree program is structured to educate those who aspire to registration and licensure to practice as architects. Most states require that an individual intending to become an architect hold a degree accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). At the University of Washington, the Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degree is the only professional degree offered in architecture. The graduate program accommodates individuals holding a preprofessional four-year degree, such as a Undergraduate Degree, and persons holding an undergraduate degree in a field other than architecture. Because of this, the requirements of the program in terms of length of residency, number of credits, and specific courses will vary depending upon the candidate's undergraduate major and academic background, as well as professional or other related work experience.
The curriculum (see the Master of Architecture curriculum for details) emphasizes the development of skills and knowledge required by the practicing architect. Chief among these skills is design. Design has been defined as the act of synthesis - both rational and methodical as well as intuitive and inspired - of an array of opportunities and constraints. It is a specific type of problem-solving, sometimes called "reflection-in-action" that uses spatial and visual modes of thinking and expression. Design studio is where students most fully experience the integration of cultural, social and artistic values in architectural design. This includes the stated and unstated values of their instructors, of their fellow students, and of themselves. Supporting and informing the design studio is a comprehensive range of required and elective courses: graphics, theory, history, structures, environmental science, social factors, cultural studies, and professional practice, and a host of related offerings from departments in the College and University.
Design studio problems are often set within urban areas or natural settings in the Puget Sound region, which has clear bio-geographic and climatic definition and character. The critical examination of urbanism and/or regionalism - including climate, topography, vegetation, typology, materials, detail, construction, history, culture and mythology - is a frequent studio focus. Implicit in this focus is the hope that students and faculty can help to foster an understanding and celebration of a distinctive sense of place. Studios can also include a significant community service component, reflecting the Department's commitment to the city and the region.
Many of the design faculty are especially interested in issues surrounding the "making" of architecture. This reflects a strong regional craft heritage and is reflected in studios which focus on tectonic issues, as well as those in furniture and light fixture design. The Department also offers "design-build" studios, both locally and internationally.
Candidates applying to the Master of Architecture program must apply to both the Graduate School and the Department of Architecture.
