| Architecture Research |
 | | Category Architecture | | Description: Architecture Research MPhil PhD
Research in the subjects of Architecture, Interiors and Landscape is an integral part of the Faculty of Arts and Architecture's research programme. The work falls largely into three broad categories: historical, critical and cultural studies in landscape, architecture and design; innovative and sustainable design practice; and spatial design/architectural pedagogy. The staff in this field undertake text and practice-based research, participate in international conferences, serve on editorial boards, and examine and advise in other institutions, nationally and internationally.
These activities are closely linked to research into materials, practices and processes; natural and constructed environments; the material lifecycle of buildings; the environmental impact of development; the productive urban landscape; and the recycling of buildings and their material remains.
Other aspects of architecture and design research in the school and the faculty include the application of new and composite materials and forms in the design of buildings, spaces and objects. This work explores how these impact on and inform both the means of their production and also the manner in which they are conceived, received and represented.
Critical design practice at Brighton involves a wide range of practising designers, all of whom combine teaching with their practice-based academic research. Their work includes significant international competition winners, digital and spatial installations, and technically and spatially innovative architectural projects.
Additionally, staff have undertaken historical, critical and cultural research in a wide range of topics including architectural monographs on Giancarlo de Carlo, Geoffrey Bawa and Charles Rennie Macintosh; modernism and healthcare in Britain; studies of classical Greece; the Crystal Palace; the Royal Festival Hall; and the airport as a cultural landscape.
The architectural programme has links with Brno (Czech Republic), Lund (Sweden) and RMIT in Melbourne and is developing new research associations with Japan, Cuba and the United States, as well as exploring collaborative projects in the UK in a range of complementary disciplines.
Recent postgraduate research projects have included a comparison of British and Saudi Arabian strategies in public buildings, the architectural language of the asylum, the exploration of traditional bay windows, and the environmental performance of bioclimatic high-rise office buildings in Malaysia.
